What is rufous bellied kookaburra?

The Rufous-bellied Kookaburra is a species of bird native to Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, and Australia. It is part of the kingfisher family, but unlike many of its kin, it does not live near bodies of water.

The Rufous-bellied Kookaburra has a striking appearance with its deep red throat, dark brown head, and bright blue wings. They are around 43cm tall and weigh between 300 and 425 grams.

These birds are territorial and form long-term bonds with their partners. They usually live in pairs and defend their territory aggressively. During the breeding season, the female lays two to three white eggs, which both parents incubate.

The Rufous-bellied Kookaburra feeds on a variety of prey, including insects, spiders, small mammals, and birds. They often capture their prey by swooping down from their perch to capture it in their strong bill.

The Rufous-bellied Kookaburra is not considered threatened, and its population is stable. They are often seen around urban areas and are known for their distinctive laughing call, which is a symbol of the Australian bush.
